
James is a veteran strategist with three decades of experience in corporate, agency and public sectors. He has a track record of offering sound advice, solving difficult problems, protecting reputation and delivering results from the most challenging audiences and circumstances.
Prior to joining Throughline he served in senior roles at Schneider Electric, Verisign and Hill + Knowlton Strategies, and with both the UK and European Union diplomatic services.
In his corporate career he has built engagement and communications functions in the technology, energy and sustainability space, in firms ranging in size from startup to multinational. He has led multidisciplinary teams and managed sophisticated client engagements, and has counselled sovereign clients in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
As a diplomat he served both the UK and the EU in London, Washington DC, Brussels, Cape Town, Moscow and Kyiv. He has advised on issues from sustainability to constitutional reform, handled high-profile crises, and led engagement at the United Nations, World Economic Forum and other key international fora.
He now brings this combination of cultural fluency, corporate understanding and global mindset to Throughline and its clients.
He holds a Masters degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Edinburgh, and a postgraduate diploma from the Open University Business School. He frequently guest lectures at universities in the Washington DC area and beyond, and serves on the board of Progress Humanity, a nonprofit which aims to solve conflict and drive economic development through the power of media and cultural influence.
